Nursing - Neonatal Nurse

There is no two ways about the fact that to become a nurse one must very special with lots of care and humanity, even more in the case of Neonatal Nursing. A neonatal nurse must be far better than a normal as they specialize in taking care of new born babies. This include taking care of premature babies who are mostly underweight and the babies which suffer from small illness to even chronic conditions. For a nurse to be considered for the role of a neonatal nurse there are some of prerequisites which have to be met. It is of prime importance to know these prerequisites before one aspires to become a neonatal nurse.

Neonatal nurses do play a very important anchoring role in the lives of the mother and the new born. They are registered nurses who specialize in the health care of new born babies especially handling them in intensive care scenario. This is one of the most demanding and challenging job which not only involves good technical or medical knowledge to handle the newborns but requires a lot of emotionally care with kind heartedness and in some cases motherly affection as well. They are also required to train the mothers on how to handle the babies.

A baby after it is born till it is twenty eight days old is known as a neonatal, which means new born. There are three levels in neo natal nursing, they are:

Level 1:

These neonatal nurses are generally the ones which have less experience in neonatal nursing. They take care of normal healthy newborns which is much less complex when compared with handling newborns in intensive care or with mild illness

Level 2:

This kind of nurses deals with newborn, which are premature and under weight or newborns suffering from mild illnesses. They would require some amount of extra care compared to newborns which are normal. Level 2 neonatal nurses would require skill level as they might have to provide therapies or treatment to the premature babies or to the babies with mile illness. They also should be a comforting factor for the mothers and their families.

Level 3:

Level 3 neonatal nurses specialize in handling babies which require intensive care because of complicated illness. These babies would be kept in the intensive care unit and are taken care exclusively only by the level 3 neonatal nurses. Level 3 can also be termed as Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Neonatal nurses are in every high demand all over the world, with the shortage of qualified neonatal nurse it one of the best fields in nursing to get in to. Although it is considered to be the most delicate, demanding and challenging the rewards for this in terms of a career as well as in monetary terms are excellent. They get paid fairy lucrative salaries and can match the salaries of a person any contemporary profession. More than the money the amount of satisfaction a neonatal nurse gets while take care of new born can not be matched all anywhere else even in the other fields of nursing.
