How to Write Good Leads?
The lead is one of the most important parts of any piece of writing, as it lays the foundation for the reader. Everyone knows that and is aware of its role in writing.In news writing, lead is considered as the most important part than the rest of the paragraphs. Do you wonder why?
Since news has been so very vital in our daily living, when reading a newspaper early morning, most people don’t have enough time to read all news articles up to its last paragraph.
Instead, they will just skip the body and read the lead before proceeding to the next news article. Why is that so? That’s because, the lead is purposely written in order to answer major questions about the news headline. Basically, it provides information which came from a “Who, What, Where, When, Why and How” questions.
Therefore it has been a complete paragraph to provide such important information to the public. But that’s only an example to a news writing story or article.
How about for the rest of the forms of writing? Why does the first paragraph or the lead still has been so very important in your content writing?
Well, most readers always read the first paragraph before deciding whether or not to pursue reading the rest of the content.
Once your readers will get hooked with your first paragraph, they will eventually read and finish reading up your content without second thoughts.
That is why writing your lead effectively is your priority to garner more readers after your publish your work.
Done well, it can entice them to read further. Executed poorly, it can cause them to lose interest entirely.
Naturally, you’ll have to clean up the rest of the work with a good composition software to keep them there, but the lead is what sets the stage for things to come. How do you hook readers with your leads?
1. Get them involved. Hook the reader by getting them involved in your story, either as a willing participant (“Ever wanted to know how to assemble your own computer in under one hour?”) or as an eager audience (“Don’t you just love watching a train-wreck of a celebrity? Here’s one.”)
2. Offer a taste of what will be revealed. Get your reader on board right from the get-go by giving them a peek at your best hand, instead of laying out everything like in a news story. Tease them with a whiff of your best material, let them guess what’s coming next and let the rest unfold.
3. Evoke a strong emotion. You can shock the reader with an outlandish statement, ask them a provocative question, gross them out or do any dozens of other things that involves riling them up. The more emotionally-invested they become with your lead, the greater the chances that they’ll want to follow through.
4. Drop an outstanding factoid. A piece of fact that brings a dramatic significance can be enough to get them glued. Think of something fascinating or impressive, and lead with it.
